Creating, Collecting, Giving | Art Rotterdam 2022
11 am–2:30 pm
In conjunction with this year’s edition of the contemporary art fair Art Rotterdam, Kunstinstituut Melly presents a series of programs for arts professionals and aficionados. The events are held at Kunstinstituut Melly on Saturday, 21 May 2022. The day’s program involves presentations by collectors and directors of private collections, followed by conversations.
Part 1: Private Collections, Public Engagements
11 am – 12:30 pm
When it pertains to contemporary art, the relation between collecting and philanthropy is at times indistinct. And yet, there is a clear difference between building a private collection from building an institution or an audience. This program brings together Sietske van Zanten (director of LAM museum in Lisse) and Marie Martraire (director of collections at KADIST in Paris and San Francisco) to present the collections they care for, as well as their institutional efforts in public engagement. A conversation between them and the public will be moderated by Sofía Hernández Chong Cuy, director at Kunstinstituut Melly.
Part 2: Ethics of Collecting
1 – 2:30 pm
This year sees the publication of an independent and international Code of Conduct for Contemporary Art Collectors: ethicsofcollecting.org. The Code encourages collectors to rethink their role as “socially just, accountable, and transparent.” The code was drafted by an international group of collectors, and three of them travel to Rotterdam to present the Code at Kunstinstituut Melly: Iordanis Kerenidis, Piergiorgio Pepe, and Sandra Terdjman. Their presentation will be followed by a conversation with the public moderated by Alexander Ramselaar, chairman of the Dutch Stichting Collectors of Contemporary Art (C.o.C.A.).
Part 3: C.o.C.A. Curatorial Walkthrough
5 – 6 pm
C.o.C.A. guest curator Ellis Kat will talk about artist Nokukhanya Langa’s A Downward Spiral Is A Loaded Spring, presented in Anchored, the newest project space at Kunstinstituut Melly's second-floor galleries. For more information, click here.
Additionally, Kunstinstituut Melly presents a new limited edition by artist Simon Fujiwara in Booth #99 at Art Rotterdam, taking place at the Van Nelle Fabriek from 19–22 May 2022.
