Raed Yassin
Raed Yassin (1979, Beirut, Lebanon) lives and works in Beirut, Lebanon, and Berlin, Germany. Working with video, sound, and visual art, he examines his personal history and its function within a collective narrative, through the lens of consumer culture and mass production. His practice spans traditional Lebanese embroidery in silk, performance, video, installation, photography, and ceramics. Often his works refers to the enduring legacy of the Lebanese Civil War (1975-1990), to capture its destruction in intimate as well as public ways.
Yassin graduated from the theatre department at the Institute of Fine Arts in Beirut in 2003. Recent solo exhibitions include: The Future is Nostalgic, Kalfayan Galleries (Athens, 2017); Oktobarski Salon, Belgrade City Museum, (Belgrade, 2014); This is The Time, This Is The Record Of Time, Stedelijk Museum (Amsterdam 2014); Blue Times, Vienna Kunsthalle (Vienna, 2014); In Search Of Lost Time, Castrum Peregrini (Amsterdam, 2014); and Whose Gaze Is It Anyway, ICA (London, 2014), among others. Recent group exhibitions include: Beirut, Beyrut, Bayrut, Beyrouth, Beyrouth, Ystads Konstmuseum (Ystad, 2019); But a Storm is Blowing from Paradise: Contemporary Art of the Middle East and North Africa, The Guggenheim Museum (New York, 2016); Unraveled, Beirut Art Center (Beirut, 2016); and White Cube…Literally: On Form and Convention of Display, Gallery Isabelle van den Eynde (Dubai, 2016), among others. He was awarded the Fidus Prize (2009), the Abraaj Capital Art Prize (2012), the AFAC grant for production (2018 & 2010), the YATF grant for production (2008 & 2012) and the Cultural Resource grant for production (2008). He is a founding member of Atfal Ahdath, a Beirut based art collective.
