In this edition of FOCUS, we welcome special guest Staci Bu Shea, for a dive into our current and final Solo Duet exhibition, Bewaard, by Sijben Rosa. This FOCUS will reflect on what it means to live intimately with death and grief, and how this is explored through art, from Staci Bu Shea’s perspective as a curator, writer, and holistic death care worker.

The exhibition, Bewaard, includes an installation of biodegradable sculptures created by Sijben in conversation with four people in the Netherlands whose sense of mortality is heightened due to aging or illness. Over the course of this months-long, community-oriented commission, the artist enlisted the support of Bu Shea towards informing a nuanced and supportive approach to these conversations, and the manifold sensitivities therein.
