A Mic of One's Own: Oma
7–9 pm
Visit or participate in a new edition of A Mic of One’s Own, a series of collaborations between The Writer’s Guide (to the Galaxy) and Kunstinstituut Melly!
As always the theme of this edition is inspired by a current exhibition at Kunstinstituut Melly. This edition relates to the group exhibition titled My Oma, which focuses on the figure of the grandmother.
My Oma is the closing exhibition and public-engagement project of Sofía Hernández Chong Cuy’s tenure as the director of Kunstinstituut Melly. It marks her six years of transformational institutional work here, which began in January 2018 and concludes in December 2023. The exhibition and its parallel projects result from curatorial research and public outreach conducted by her and her team—including curators Rosa de Graaf, Jessy Koeiman, Julija Mockutė, and Vivian Ziherl—during this span of time.
Read more about the exhibition and participating artists here.
We are looking for writers, poets, spoken word artists or songwriters who want to share their thoughts about this theme. More information on where and how to apply will follow shortly.
With these sessions, we aim to create a safe space for intimate stories to be shared. To ensure that, we expect all participants to respect each other’s privacy and vulnerability.

As part of the collaborative nature of Jessy Koeiman's work in collective learning, she brings The Writer's Guide (to the Galaxy) and their series A Mic of One's Own to our multi-functional space on the ground floor, simply called MELLY. This bookshop, café, and event space is developed with our collective learning spirit in mind.
