Writer’s Clinic
On Tuesday 27 November Adam Kleinman (Writer, Rotterdam/New York) hosts a one-day writer’s clinic for young and aspiring art critics. Beginning with a morning pro-seminar, the team is tasked with formulating a set of criteria to evaluate various “good” and “poor” reviews collected and put forward by each member of the group respectively. Breaking from this format, Witte de With’s Amira Gad (Associate Curator/Publications) gives a tour of the current exhibition Surplus Authors for the participants. Finally, the day culminates in two twinned activities; for the first, each participant is required to draft a short piece on the just visited exhibition, and for the second, the group then applies the morning’s editorial guidelines to the newly minted pieces via a concluding workshop.
Symposium
Writer’s Clinic is organised in conjunction with the symposium I AM FOR AN ART CRITICISM THAT… A symposium on the use and influence of arts writing today. The symposium takes place on two successive afternoons and evenings—one in Rotterdam and one in Amsterdam— on Wednesday 28 November and Thursday 29 November. This symposium is conceived and organized by Witte de With Center for Contemporary Art (Rotterdam), and presented in collaboration with the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam in the context of the Prijs voor de Jonge Kunstkritiek 2012 which is an initiative of de Appel Arts Centre (Amsterdam), the Mondriaan Fund and Witte de With Center for Contemporary Art.
