BOOKS: Amelia Groom

Join us for this special BOOKS edition to celebrate the launch of Beverly Buchanan: Marsh Ruins by writer and art historian Amelia Groom. Following the presentation, artist Dagmar Bosma will offer a response and appear in conversation.

Beverly Buchanan (1940–2015) was a sculptor working predominantly in the south of the United States, whose work linked political, ecological, and aesthetic consciousness through a sustained investigation of sculptural fragmentation and ruination. Her site-specific environmental work Marsh Ruins is situated among the tall grasses and brackish marsh waters of Brunswick on the southeast coast of Georgia. In 2019, Groom traveled to the site in search of the Ruins, also spending time with Buchanan’s papers at the Archives of American Art.

The latest publication in the Afterall ‘One Work’ series, Beverly Buchanan: Marsh Ruins presents an illustrated examination of this complex and elusive work, which exists in an ongoing state of ruination.
