Sawangwongse Yawnghwe

Sawangwongse Yawnghwe lives and works in the Netherlands. He was born in rebel-controlled Shan-State and his youth was spent in Thailand before his family fled to Canada. Working in painting and installation, Yawnghwe  engages the political image with reference to his family history, as a descendant of the Yawnghwe royal family of Shan, as well as current and historical events of Myanmar (formerly Burma). Family photographs also provide the basis for a pictorial language through which he explores events, suggesting that existing and available archives cannot reveal a nation’s entire truth. His most recent solo exhibitions have been at Jane Lombard Gallery, New York; TKG+, Taipei; and H Gallery, Bangkok.
