Patrizio di Massimo
Patrizio di Massimo (b. 1983), born in Jesi, Italy, interweaves both historical and contemporary imagery into seductive events, films and objects. In his 2008 video Oae for example, shown at the Whitechapel Gallery in London, he took Italy’s colonial occupation of Libya as its subject matter. He combined his own footage of modern day Tripoli as well as archival material and layed bare the ancient ruins of Rome as well as the more recently history of Italy under fascism. For Let Us Compare Mythologies he created a live event as the third in a trilogy in which he connected the Witte de With that operates in the field of contemporary visual culture and theory with the equestrian sculpture of Stadhouder (Governer) Willem IV, who gave Rotterdam its city rights. This sculpture is located in front of the main entrance of the Historical Museum in Rotterdam. A beautiful black horse and its rider repeatedly covered a path between the artcenter and the museum, thus metaphorically questioning whether we need to look at a classical monument in a renewed contemporary way or simply bridging history with the here and now. Di Massimo studied Fine Arts, Academy of Fine Arts of Brera, Milan (2007) and Fine Art at the Slade School of Art in London (2009), and is currently a resident at de Ateliers in Amsterdam. Recent solo exhibitions where Art Basel Statements (2010), Col Sole in Fronte, T293, Naples (2010) and Whitechapel Art Gallery, London (2009). Recent group exhibitions where The Object of The Attack, The David Roberts Art Foundation, London (2009), and The shortest short-story ever written…, FormContent project space, London (2008). href= p/W8Wedia.org/wiki/Centre_Pompidou”>Centre Pompidou.
