Peggy Wijntuin

At the start of 2022, Peggy Wijntuin was appointed by Stroom Den Haag as project leader Herdenkingsmonument Haags Slavernijverleden. Her ancestors were enslaved and she herself is 'only the third generation to be born into freedom'. Wijntuin was a municipal councilor of Rotterdam for twelve years (2006-2018) and initiator of the Slavery Monument Rotterdam (2013). She also spearheaded the research into the slavery and colonial past of Rotterdam (2020). This study prompted the Rotterdam Municipal Executive to apologize for the history of slavery. Peggy Wijntuin received a royal decoration for her efforts.
