Raja’a Khalid
Raja’a Khalid (b. 1984, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia) is an artist from Dubai, and is currently based in The Hague, the Netherlands. Her practice is concerned with the Arabian Gulf region and its contemporary narratives of work, wellness, commodity circulation, and trends in consumer culture. Over recent years, the artist has been exploring the colonially derived eco-cultural commodity network that looms large behind the current day wellness economy. She has done so through art installations, performance, interventions into the social platforms that proliferate such developments, and through collaborations with wellness practitioners. Through her work, Khalid aims to cast a sideways, comical yet critical glance at the present- day commodification of such practices; most notably, yoga.
The artist recently completed a residency at the Jan van Eyck Academy in Maastricht (2019-2020). Recent solo exhibitions include: FASTEST WITH THE MOSTEST, Tashkeel, Dubai, United Arab Emirates (2017); Change Your Life, Alserkal Avenue, Dubai, United Arab Emirates (2017). Recent group exhibitions include: I Love You, Urgently, Jeddah 21, 39, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia (2020); Speculative Landscapes, NYUAD Art Gallery, Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates (2019); Age of You, Museum of Contemporary Art, Toronto, Canada (2019); ANTI - 6th Athens Biennale, Athens, Greece (2018).
