OPEN CALL Resonantie - Melly x Amarte
Kunstinstituut Melly and Amarte are joining forces again for a new open call focused on the development of experimental, sonic and interdisciplinary work. This new initiative responds to the central theme of Melly's new program, with a significant focus on improvisation. The two selected projects will be presented in December 2024.
On September 20, Kunstinstituut Melly will open its new season with six new exhibitions that set the tone for the next four years, focusing on improvisation as an ongoing conceptual framework. The two selected Resonantie commissions are invited to engage in dialogue—indeed to resonate—with our upcoming exhibition programs. Applicants are encouraged to respond by attending the exhibitions in person and/or by reflecting on the following thematic notes;
•Land rights (landing)
•Improvisation
•Spiritual technologies
•Queer cosmologies
•Healing/repair
•History/memory
•Humor
•Time
•Call and response
•Beading/repetition
Resonantie responds to emerging forms of practice that experiment between music, sound and visual art forms. These kinds of works are often led by an artist who develops a vision, and then invites performers to join in the execution of the project. Elements of lighting, sculpture and decor are often incorporated. Music elements can range from experimental composition, to religious hymns, to poetry, dance and pop music. The Resonantie commissions are for artists living in the Netherlands – solo, duo, or in a group – who want to experiment across disciplines. Together we will explore the potential of these projects for artists and for audiences.
Applications can be made via the Amarte website with a proposed concept and production outline. A selection committee of Melly and Amarte will review the applications, chaired by Vivian Ziherl, Research and Programs Manager at Kunstinstituut Melly. The committee will be joined by two external jury members; Eliel Jones, Curator of Performance and Time-based Media, Kanal Pompidou (Brussels), Josephine Zwaan, Music Production Philosopher, Erasmus School of Philosophy (Rotterdam).
The selected projects will receive an artist fee of €1500, with additional fees for rehearsal and performance. Projects will receive a production budget of up to €6000 incl VAT. Production support will be provided by the Kunstinstituut Melly team, including technical assistance.
Open Call applications close 29 September 2024 before midnight (23:59).
Kunstinstituut Melly was conceived as an art house in Rotterdam, The Netherlands, with a mission to present and discuss the work created by international and local visual artists. We commission art, organize exhibitions, publish, and develop educational and collaborative initiatives.
